This seminar will focus on classification of workers as employees and independent contractors and the factors that the government considers in determining a worker’s status. There will be a discussion of the consequences of misclassification, and there will be an overview of the pitfalls of misclassifying a worker from an intellectual property perspective. “Work made for hire” concepts and putting procedures in place to have employees and independent contractors sign agreements memorializing their transfer of intellectual property interests to the company they are working with will be addressed. Proceeds raised at this luncheon will establish an endowment fund for the Legal Clinics at The Hebrew University. Legal clinics at the Faculty of Law provide legal support to underprivileged communities in Jerusalem, encouraging its students to volunteer in less advantaged neighborhoods and community centers.

Presented annually to a distinguished member of the legal community, the George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award recognizes the leadership, scholarship and dedication to the betterment of humanity, which was embodied by the high ideals and philanthropic commitment of the late George A. Katz, co-founder of Wachtel, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and a dear friend of the American Friends of The Hebrew University.
